The story of this art
Mani-bhumika-karma is the classical art of crafting mosaic floors and wall panels by inlaying gems, semiprecious stones, tiles, or glass into flat surfaces. Craftspeople practice this art by preparing a base of marble or stone, carving fine grooves according to a chosen design, and setting carefully cut decorative pieces into the bed. This practice is recorded in the classical lists as a decorative craft for embellishing courtyards, inner chambers, and sacred spaces. A concrete detail of the craft involves securing stones such as agate, jasper, and lapis lazuli with a paste of resin, lime, and marble dust, then buffing the floor with emery stones and water until the surface feels completely smooth to the touch. Today, this living tradition flourishes across India through marble inlay workshops in Agra and Rajasthan, along with mirror-work and tile mosaic arts seen in temples, palaces, and heritage homes across Maharashtra. Modern artisans continue to cut, set, and polish these stone patterns by hand, preserving an ancient design heritage for contemporary interiors and architectural restoration.
